Simon Sinek delivers a sobering talk on the importance of human interaction, the importance of face-to-face relationships that have been forgotten in this digital age. As technology moves the society forward, we have lost touch with some of the fundamentals of what makes us who we are, why we do what we do and what values we stand for. We don't think twice about why companies have to please their shareholders in the expense of more important values; we replaced meaningful conversations with twitter messages and Facebook status; we have lost our focus and in the process why we do what we do.

'Following your dreams' is perhaps one of the most frequently used cliches and advice given to young people, however as we mature, our dreams seems to be further and further out of reach, and we seemed to have lost touch with its meaning and power. In my talk at TEDxHuntsville, I explore the idea for following your dreams by starting projects on the side - the Wright Brothers have done it, the founders of Twitter has done it, Google does it and 3M does it. This is my story, or at least the beginning of my story, of how projects have help defined my passion, guided me through an amazing journey, allowed me to follow my dreams and made me who I am.

When sculpture meets printing

Design house Paperlux designed a beautiful cover for the Novum magazine, combining simple geometry and diecutting to alter the cover slightly to create an active surface and a sculpture-like object. This is the example of simplicity meets beauty, where its only function is tickle your curiosity and make you want to play with it. I am in love with it. (via Graphic Exchange)

Is design Thinking Dead?

Made popular by David Kelley and IDEO in mid 2000s, Design Thinking is a “problem-solving protocol that any business or profession can employ to achieve extraordinary results” (Fast Company). The term has sparked much debate in the creative field over the years, and the debate has intensified recently as the future of design thinking has been called into question.

Advocates for Design Thinking, like IDEO, have spread the idea to virtually all industries, infiltrating business, education, marketing, and science. They say this dissemination has given design and designers the credibility that we never had before in many of these industries. On the other side of the debate, some designers believe that the mass adoption of Design Thinking has undermined the complexity and true power of what’s truly a creative process.

Hands down best commencement speech I have heard

I stumbled upon Conan O'Brien's 2011 Dartmouth college Commencement Adress online. When I started watching it, it was background noise for work, but as the speech proceeded, I found myself glued to the screen and had dropped everything that I was doing. It was a fabulous mix of comedy and hard truths. The comedy was what I expected, but the serious message delivered seriously was the highlight and earned him a standing ovation.

RISD Commencement 2011

This past weekend in Providence was beautiful, the weather was sunny but dry and cool. It was the perfect weekend to be outside, but this year's RISD graduation ceremony was held indoors for the first time. For as long as I know, RISD has always had an outdoor ceremony in the middle of their downtown campus, where roads were closed and it felt like a block party or a huge festival. On top of that we have our 'traditional' dress code for graduates, where the only rule is that there are no rules. However, this year, it was a little different, it feels a lot more formal in the convention center, and we lost some oomph.

First lasagna at the first Dinner Party at Fremont

Finally I got my apartment up and running and have my first dinner party at the place! I made lasagna for the first time, with the help of Sara, for 8. It was excellent! And of course we have a side of my favorite greens, arugula. :)

Lauren Kent's Commencement

I can now count with two hand the students that I know at Brown and RISD, and most of them from Better World by Design. Although I have only graduated a mere 2 years ago, school seemed like such a long time ago. I was at Lauren's graduation at Brown yesterday. Since she was graduating from the Visual Arts department, I got to go into their new Granoff building.

My London Trip (Updated)

It is rather funny feeling about London, it feels strangely familiar although I've never been here before. Maybe its because of my English up bringing in the Hong Kong education system; or being familiar with their accents and their customs; or all the Top Gear I have been watch the past couple of years. Monthly Design Review: Exploring Design for Disaster Situations

For this month's Monthly Design Review, I have invited my friend Rosary Coloma from Australia to lead us in a conversation that is close to our hearts, no matter where you are from and where you live. Moved by the devastating natural disasters that have hit many parts of the world recently we want to explore the ways in which the fields of architecture and design may pro-actively be used for the greater good, in these tragic scenarios.

Rosary Coloma wears many creative and entrepreneurial hats. Rosary is currently the director of Coloma Projects – a new creative enterprise based in Sydney, Australia, that carries out “project management for The Arts and creative industries” (Rosary’s “elevator pitch” to sum up activities ranging from curating to producing and then some). She is also currently undertaking a Masters of Business Administration with a major in Arts Management. Rosary has a background in the Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Design.

Rosary’s other passion is raising awareness on social issues. She has been involved with community volunteer work, for example, participating in a service project in a developing nation (The Philippines) as a 19 year old. In 2010 she spoke about the devastating typhoons that struck the Philippines, at the “Global Pecha Kucha for Haiti” fundraising event at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. She is interested in exploring the possibilities of melding creative enterprise with social enterprise.

A brief background about Monthly Design Review - It started in 2009 as an experimental magazine, it became a salon meet up bringing like minded designers, entrepreneurs and thinkers together to push our understanding of design and how we could make it accessible by creating conversations.

Board game that lets kids run the world

Every year at TED there is a one or two TED talks that captivates me, and this is one of them. This is the story of John Hunter using a complex board game, called 'World Peace Game', to teach his class of 4th grader the problems faced in the world today, and giving them a chance to solve them. It started off as a plywood board game, and has grown to a multi-layer/multi-player complex game with thousands of pieces. Through this game, the school kids learn about the complexity of the world like climate change, politics and economics.

John Hunter has used this game in his classroom for years, and although the problems he throws at the kids are the same, they have the freedom to make their own decisions. Knowing that their decisions are going to affect the world, children becomes surprisingly wise and delivers every time. We should let kids run the world, there will be less 'politics', less 'BS' and more compassion.
