Simon Sinek delivers a sobering talk on the importance of human interaction, the importance of face-to-face relationships that have been forgotten in this digital age. As technology moves the society forward, we have lost touch with some of the fundamentals of what makes us who we are, why we do what we do and what values we stand for. We don't think twice about why companies have to please their shareholders in the expense of more important values; we replaced meaningful conversations with twitter messages and Facebook status; we have lost our focus and in the process why we do what we do.
I stumbled upon Conan O'Brien's 2011 Dartmouth college Commencement Adress online. When I started watching it, it was background noise for work, but as the speech proceeded, I found myself glued to the screen and had dropped everything that I was doing. It was a fabulous mix of comedy and hard truths. The comedy was what I expected, but the serious message delivered seriously was the highlight and earned him a standing ovation.
Morgan Spurlock's TED Talk very much sums up how a great story unfolds and how to push the right buttons in people to get to the truths. Often at time that leads to awkward and yet entertaining truths. Enjoy:
It is super exciting to see Monthly Design Review enter into it's second year, started as an idea in 2009 as a magazine, it grew into a monthly meeting in 2010. Started as a small meet up for like-minded designers and entrepreneurs who were contributing for the magazine, we began to attract different people to join our conversations about the value and power of design.
The MDR team in New York City have started a lecture series towards the end of 2010 and in our first meeting of 2011, we invited the founder of Behance, Scott Belsky to share about his thoughts and theories about making ideas happen. We had one of the biggest turns out since the having these monthly meetings of about 100 people. It was a great way to start of the new year and we look forward to getting more designers and thinkers from around New York City. For February, we'll be having a smaller more intimate conversation, check our website soon for more details
I don't know if it is the effects of TEDWomen or not, I have been meeting and getting to know more and more amazing passionate women changing the world. My quest for the rest of my time in Hong Kong is to balance out my network of awesome people by finding more like-minded passionate guys!
Chuck Berry, a master of wing suit gliding, shares of his experience and his philosophy in life. Seeing the world from his point of view, understanding and accepting the risks that comes with diving down at immense speed. It is a truly terrifying and freeing experience. In life like in skydiving, we need to think ahead, because one moment you are here and the other you are there.
This is probably one of the biggest news in the design and business world of the day, Starbucks changes its logo. Starbucks is probably one of the most iconic companies in the capitalistic world that we now live in, with stores in probably every other country, where coffee is to Starbuck as Coke is to soft drinks, there are less people who don't know the brand than do. The question is, did the rebranding go too far by loosing their name? (Or will it be like Pepsi, have the last laugh?)
We’re honored to host Scott Belsky, CEO & Founder of Behance, at January’s Monthly Design Review. Being that Monthly Design is an experiment, our format changes from month to month. With the new year ahead of us, we have big plans for Monthly Design Review and are thrilled to have Scott kick off the new year helping us all focus on making our big ideas happen. Scott Belsky believes that the greatest breakthroughs across all industries are a result of creative people and teams that are especially productive. As such, Scott has committed his professional life to help organize creative individuals, teams, and networks. Scott is the founder and CEO of Behance, a company that develops products and services for creative industries. Behance oversees the Behance Network, the world’s leading online platform for creative professionals; The 99%, Behance’s think tank and annual conference devoted to execution in the creative world, and Action Method, a popular online/mobile productivity application and line of organizational paper products. Scott is also the author of the national bestselling book Making Ideas Happen. Ideas are worthless if you can’t make them happen. Many of us believe that great ideas inevitably lead to success. Nothing could be further from the truth. Whether it is the perfect solution for an everyday problem or a bold new concept for a creative masterpiece, you must transform vision into reality for an idea to have value. This book chronicles the methods of exceptionally productive creative leaders and teams – companies like Google, IDEO, and Disney, and individuals like author Chris Anderson and Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh – that make their ideas happen, time and time again. Location / Date / Time Thursday, January 20th 8pm. The Salt Space 1158 Broadway 5th Floor Entrance on W 27th St. RSVP As seating is limited, please RSVP via our Event on Facebook.
Monthly Design Review is a spin off from Big New Ideas, started in 2009. It is a monthly gathering of creative individuals in New York City, where we invite a speaker monthly and generate conversation around the value, power and purpose of Design.
What could be a better way to start out the new year with a combination of everything I love about life, cycling, good company, good weather and challenges (the 1000ft climb and the mentally stimulating questions). There is 'No pain, no gain', as I rode downhill on the other side of Lantau at 60km/h looking into the endless ocean with no buildings or man made object in sight, made all the uphill worth it. hanging out with one of my favorite people in Hong Kong, Connie Tung, having wonderful conversation over lunch and the sun filled beach. This is the first time in a long time that I felt throughly relaxed and recharged.
Monthly Design Review had a great meeting yesterday with several core members to talk about the direction of the Get Together. We have been meeting for 7 months in New York City, and we had some amazing conversation. However much we love to talk about design, deep down we are itching to make change. We have successfully brought together some of the most talented designers and creatives in the city, but now what?
Today, we announced the theme for this month and the direction for the rest of the year - "Action speaks louder than words"
As a gathering of great minds, our goal has always been is to turn our brilliant conversations into positive action. Our goal for the rest of 2010 at Monthly Design Review is work towards an action oriented event to cap off the year.
